AOL America Online is a now defunct online messaging service. It used to be popular, back when every was forced into using AOL, but now, since they aren't no one uses it. Nowadays it has been re branded as AIM and still holds a large chunk of Instant messaging particularly in the United States {1} (2006) AIM is slowly falling into obscurity because of the fact that the majority of the users used AOL to access the internet and then had a AIM account. Now that the numbers of people who use AOL is dropping it corresponds to an equal drop in the number of people who use AIM.
